How convivial it all was again in and around The Hague on the third Tuesday of September. Angry farmers with tractors, hay fires along the motorways, disruption on the railways. A government that, like its predecessors, gets no further than analysing the problems. The social partners and the House of Representatives are invited to put forward ideas for solutions. And in the meantime, we are becoming poorer and poorer.

The May half-term holiday came at just the right moment this year. It is actually quite odd that it officially ends on 1 May. All schools are off this week, and some even add an extra week on either side—like Thijs’s school. It offered a welcome chance to unwind before the summer crowds we will soon be facing again.
It is that time of year again for filing income tax returns. Following the merger of the Hulsberg and Soest offices, the volume of returns is quite substantial.
