Every day, employees are on the road for their employer. This could be commuting, an employee getting lunch for their colleagues, or even a staff outing. Supreme Court rulings have increasingly tightened employers' liability for employees on the road. Case law has determined that employer liability goes beyond the obligation to provide a safe workplace and safe tools.
The position of self-employed workers in the Netherlands has been the subject of debate for years, and the 2024 court rulings caused another stir. Both the Deliveroo judgment by the Supreme Court and the Uber judgment by the Court of Justice of the EU confirm that some working relationships have been wrongly classified as “self-employed collaboration”, while in practice there is an employer-employee relationship and therefore employment.

Another postponement... The introduction of the ‘lump sum’ scheme has been postponed again. This means that pensioners will only be able to withdraw up to 10% of their accrued pension or annuity capital in one lump sum from 1 July 2026. The scheme is designed to provide additional financial flexibility, for example for a major expense at retirement.
