Decency

Decency

The CDA campaign leaders have decided on the campaign theme. By choosing the theme of decency, they are really standing out and making an impression on people. It is not only this theme that is responsible for Henri Bontenbal's strong showing in the polls. His media appearances appeal to a significant portion of the electorate. However, the trend shows that his rise is stalling. Apparently, there are limits to appealing to decency.

What is meant by decency?
It reminded me of Balkenende's standards and values, as well as his appeal to the VOC mentality. It probably refers to a standard of behaviour. The CDA leader has something in mind with regard to the behaviour he desires from Dutch citizens. I asked ChatGPT what decency is:

“Decency” means something like appropriate behaviour, politeness and respect for others. It is about how you behave in social situations, taking into account the norms and values that are considered correct or proper within a particular society or group.

Key points of decency

  • Showing respect: You take others into account, listen and treat people with dignity.
  • Politeness: Using appropriate manners, such as ‘thank you’ and ‘please’.
  • Following norms and values: It's not just about rules, but also about unwritten agreements about what is ‘appropriate’ and what is not. Self-control: Do not immediately express your emotions or impulses, but think about how your behaviour affects others.

Example

  • Decent behaviour: letting someone go first at the door, apologising if you disturb someone.
  • Indecent behaviour: shouting in a quiet room, swearing at someone, not taking agreements into account.

It is beginning to dawn on me, although it is still elusive. Would the CDA, for example, want to abolish the assertiveness course? Would it be good if people were ashamed again when they behaved improperly, if shyness became a virtue again? Henri Bontenbal has been a member of the House of Commons since 2021. He has spent a lot of time there, and I wonder if this environment gives him the right picture of society.

What ChatGPT gives as an example of indecent behaviour can also be replaced by the debates in the House of Representatives. Surely he must know that he is not the first and not the only one to appeal to this, in other words, achieving decency in the Binnenhof is futile. Members of the House of Representatives must proclaim a belief, serve their electorate. The louder they shout, the more successful they are.

All in all, this institute has made itself redundant. How I would love to see us go to the polls not to elect loudmouths, but to elect competent ministers and secretaries of state. We currently leave that to the loudmouths, and we have seen where that leads.
