Solar panels and fire risks

Solar panels and fire risks

Solar panels are a smart and sustainable investment, but also carry risks. To manage these risks and limit damage, there is the SCIOS Scope 12 certification scheme. This scheme sets requirements for both the company and the inspector inspecting the solar panel installation. The focus is on electrical and structural safety, reducing fire risks, and recording and registering inspection results.

Fire or damage to solar panels can have unpleasant consequences. Indeed, solar panel particles can be scattered for kilometres after an incident. This is why the Insurers' Association has drawn up a special investigation protocol for solar panel incidents. This protocol provides clarity on responsibilities after damage. These include identifying scattered particles, drawing up a clean-up plan, cleaning the area, and a final inspection by a certified specialist.

Insurance and liability for damages
The damage after a fire incident can be extensive. It is not just the solar panels themselves, but also the loss of yield, damage to buildings or crops (e.g. in the case of farmers), remnants of insulation material and solar panel particles that have become loose. Because such damage is not always fully insured as standard, it is important to check that the right insurance policies are in place. For example, consider building or home insurance with comprehensive cover for clean-up costs, or environmental damage insurance (MSV). Note: solar panels are not always automatically included in home insurance policies. Therefore, always check the policy conditions or consult your intermediary.

With proper prevention, inspection and insurance, you can avoid unpleasant surprises and ensure that your solar investment is well protected.
