Accountants: workload is increasing due to objections

Accountants believe that the "exceptional" workload already experienced will increase significantly later this year. For example, like many other sectors, the accountants have a shortage of staff and are busy processing statements about the corona support measures, and they also expect many objections later this year. That is what the Royal Dutch Association of Accountants (NBA) says.

The organization signals a "calm before the storm" with regard to the objections. This is partly due to the delay in the provisional and final assessment for the 2021 income tax from the Tax Authorities and because of a recalculation that has to be done on capital.

"Many citizens and entrepreneurs will undoubtedly believe, even after a refund has been granted, that insufficient justice is being done. We therefore expect that many objections will be filed against that final assessment", the organization responds to the possible delay.

Accountancy firms for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in particular will become busier. "A later final determination means that there will be an accumulation and there will be further pressure on the planning of SMEs in particular," according to the NBA. The NBA could not yet say how many vacancies the accountancy sector currently has.

At the beginning of July, the Tax and Customs Administration reported that more than 36,000 people had received a letter about the delay. This delay is the result of an adjustment in the service's systems. In total, approximately 9.5 million reports were received, a spokesperson said. The service says it has made no distinction between the type of declaration that has been delayed. The service could not say exactly how long the delay will last, but there is already a warning for months.
